How MIBL tamed complex IRDAI incentives for 30,000+ agents
One of India's largest insurance brokers replaced spreadsheet-based incentive calculations with a parameterized, IRDAI-aligned engine in Incentivate — automating weekly payouts and reporting for 30,000+ point-of-sales agents.
The challenge
MIBL operates PAN-India with a network of more than 30,000 point-of-sales agents, and its incentive program had to honor IRDAI guidelines that varied by region, vehicle category, policy type, policy term, and coverage type — an enormous matrix of unique combinations. Spreadsheets simply couldn’t keep up.
The sales operations team spent weeks running calculations while executives spent hours validating them, and agents received their incentive details as bare Excel files with no calculation breakdown — which sapped motivation and productivity. Roughly 80% of erroneous transactions ended in wrong incentive payouts.
The solution
Incentivate integrated directly with MIBL’s MSSQL server through scheduled jobs to pull raw transaction and employee data, then ran it through a parameterized engine aligned to IRDAI guidelines. Agents got a near-real-time incentive and performance dashboard behind Single Sign-On.
Maker-checker controls let the operations team audit every parameter change, exception management handled data-error overrides, and processing moved from a monthly manual grind to a weekly cycle — with a SAP-compatible payout file handed straight to Finance.
The results
Erroneous transactions that had been driving wrong payouts fell by 80%, and the sales operations team gained 50% more bandwidth to spend on value-added work instead of spreadsheet calculations. Field teams gained near-real-time visibility into individual and team performance, and weekly dashboards let sales operations track field-level results — even surfacing the best- and worst-performing insurance providers to guide product promotions.
